Much of the ice has melted in the pools and some snow geese are beginning to arrive in the vicinity.

Ice has melted from much of the area's wetland pools. Most of the wetland pools will be drained for management purposes soon after ice out. Hunting will still be permitted but water will be limited.

Pools/Units Open for Hunting The East side refuge, west side refuge and the two fields on either side of the entrance road are closed during the conservation order. The remainder of the area is open to light goose hunting.
Area Hunt Procedures All hunters must check in prior to hunting, and check out at the conclusion of their hunt, through the Hunter Check-In Room located on the west end of the shop building.

A Conservation Order Permit is the only permit required to hunt snows, blues and Rossís geese. All pools are currently at full pool elevations. Beginning February 1, 2016 pools will be drawn down gradually for management purposes, and to be completely drawn down by March 15, 2016.

Area Hunt Procedures Pools 1,2,6,7,8 and 9 are refuge. Hunters are required to obtain a Daily Waterfowl Hunting Tag prior to hunting and return harvest cards at the completion of their hunt. Daily tags are located in the hunter check-in room on the north side of the headquarters building.

Snow goose numbers on and around Duck Creek have been highly variable for the past few weeks. Populations range from 0 to 5,000 and change daily.

The number of snow geese roosting on the area has been changing daily. Numbers have gone from 3,000 to 0 to 10,000, and now less than 100 in the last few days. The area is ice-free as of Feb. 3. This information will be updated as conditions or area snow goose numbers change significantly.

Area Hunt Procedures Hunters must self-register at the area headquarters by filling out the green Daily Waterfowl Tag found in the self-registration booth just north of the lobby entrance. Once registered, hunters must check out by returning the bottom portion of the tag to report their harvest, even if they chose not to hunt or nothing was harvested.
